Chapter 7

Scott

Scott and their mother were too alike. It was why they’d always butted heads when the twins were growing up. They were both too stubborn to give way, but it bothered Scott that she was trying to make them feel bad about it. They were adults, after all.

“Look, we’ll be there for Christmas dinner as always,” he said, “but we’re spending the morning at home.” He stood. “We’ve had a long day. Can we visit you tomorrow after we’ve had some sleep?”

Eliza pursed her lips but nodded and stood. “Fine.” She opened her arms to Devon, who hugged her. She didn’t offer him one—he’d never been one for hugs from her—but she nodded and aimed for the front door.

When they heard it slam shut, they both exhaled. “You could’ve been nicer about it,” Devon said, taking their mother’s still-full cup to the sink.

“Why? She always does this. It’s like we can’t have a life without telling her all about it.”

Devon sighed. “I know, but we have a lot more to hide now.”

Scott stopped behind him, sliding his arms around his chest as he had done that morning before they’d…

“I know. I can’t help it, though. She winds me up.”

“And you wind her up.”

Scott nestled his face into Devon’s neck and inhaled. “Yes, I do.” He sighed. “I’ll try not to do it. I know you’re worried about her finding out.”

“I’m worried about everyone finding out.” Devon sighed again and twisted in his arms to face him. He slid his arms around Scott’s neck. “I don’t want to lose you.”

“You won’t,” he promised. “No matter what.”

Scott nipped at Devon’s lips. “Shall we go to bed?”

Devon dropped his head back, moaning. “Yes, please.”

This time, when Scott carried Devon to bed, he entered his own room. He carefully set Devon on his feet and undressed him, kissing exposed skin, but not taking it any further. This was not about sex for him. He wanted to show Devon how much he cared for him. When Devon was naked, Scott pulled the covers back and encouraged him to slide in. Then he undressed and climbed in beside him. When their warm skin touched, goosebumps rose across Scott’s entire body. Like a wave rolling over him and leaving behind a tingling sensation.

He wrapped his arms around Devon, pulling him close, and Devon rested his head on Scott’s chest, right over his heart.

“I can’t believe this is real, but I’m so happy it is,” Devon whispered.

Scott smiled but said nothing, already worrying about how they were going to react around each other when they were at their parents’ house the following day. Would they be able to keep their hands to themselves? It had only been a day since they’d agreed to make a go of things. A day! And yet, it felt like they’d been together for far longer.

Had they been acting like they were in a relationship before they made it official between themselves?
